Mode of action:
In combination, the two active constituents have a bactericidal activity against most gram-positive and gram-negative pathogenic bacteria. The combination acts by inhibiting sequential steps in the biosynthetic pathway that is used by micro-organisms in their synthesis of folate cofactors. Sulphadiazine inhibits the incorporation of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) into folic acid and Trimethoprim inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which converts dihydrofolic acid into tetrahydrofolic acid.
Indications:
For treatment of infections of the respiratory tract, urogenital tract and alimentary tract, the gallbladder and biliary tract, skin, soft tissue and bone, general septicemic conditions, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis and other diseases in dogs and cats, caused by sulphadiazine / trimethoprim-sensitive micro-organisms and protozоа.
Contraindications:
Do not use in animals with a hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, trimethoprim, or to any of the excipients. Do not use in animals with severe hepatic or renal impairment
and impairment to the hematopoietic system, in pregnant and lactating dogs and cats.
Adverse reactions:
Although rare in dogs are possible crystalluria, gastrointestinal disorders (loss appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, disbacteriosis) and skin symptoms (redness, rash, pruritus, photosensitivity, swelling of the face). Very rarely with prolonged use registered transient hematological changes (aplastic anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, methemoglobinemia), keratoconjunctivitis sicca, fever, hypothyroidism, polyarthritis. In cats were observed anorexia, anemia and leukopenia.
Medicine or other forms of interaction
The sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim can increase serum levels and increase the effects of coumarin anticoagulants , phenylbutazone , indomethacin , salicylates, probenecid, oral antidiabetics with sulfonylurea structure , thiazide diuretics, phenytoin. Antacids reduce absorption of sulfamethoxazole from the alimentary canal and urotropin increases crystalluria .
Local anesthetics from the group of esters of para-aminobenzoic acid ( procaine, anestezin , dikain ) reduce the activity of the sulfonamides .
